Recommended Ages: Adults Bird Houses for Conservation Learn about conservation efforts related to the much loved Eastern Blue Bird and the American Kestrel, a species in decline. Then find out how to build, correctly place, and maintain bird houses for each species. We’ll help you put your own plan into action to help these birds as you build a bird house at Prescott Farm and take it with you to place at home or at any other suitable location. Recommended Ages: Adults Mushrooms: Growing Mushrooms at Home Delicious and nutritious, mushrooms are a culinary treat. Learn how to grow shiitake and wine cup mushrooms and go home with your own fully inoculated log so you can enjoy your own freshly harvested mushrooms later this year! Recommended Ages: Adults Frogging by Ear During the springtime, Frogs are part of nature’s symphony. Join us for an early evening forest hike to the wetland areas of Prescott Farm. We’ll begin indoors to learn about the springtime habits of the frogs we are most likely to hear. Then, we’ll hike out to our wetland areas to see if we can identify which frogs are at Prescott Farm. No prior experience frogging by ear is necessary. Recommended Ages: Adults Spring Songbirds The hills and valleys are alive with music! Join us to learn about and identify the many native songbirds of Prescott Farm. Recommended Ages: Adults Needle Felted Pollinators Join us for a beginner needle felt class. We’ll learn the basics of needle felting in three dimensions and each participant will take home a felted New Hampshire pollinator. Recommended Ages: Adults Get ready for a bountiful spring of garden goodies! Participants will explore how tiny seeds can grow into large plants. Participants will mix their own potting soil which they will use to plant basil, tomatoes, and microgreens to finish growing at home. Recommended Ages: 6-12 Spring is the season when New Hampshire’s reptiles and amphibians start to be up and about. We’ll start with an introduction to Prescott Farm’s resident box turtle and then take a hike to see who else is out and about in the forest. Bring your waterproof boots and be prepared to explore the wet and sometimes muddy areas where amphibians are found. Recommended Ages: 6-12 Make your own pasta by hand! We will make fettuccine colored red with tomatoes and ravioli colored green with pesto. And finally we will make a homemade cheese sauce to top off both. Note: recipes will involve gluten, dairy, and eggs. Recommended Ages: 6-12 As spring awakens, our pollinators are starting to emerge to help our plants! Learn about honey bees while making two crafts using beeswax: candles and homemade beeswax food wrap. Recommended Ages: 6-12 Live & Play Tick Free! Warmer weather and longer days are beckoning us to spend more time outside. Find out how to enjoy those picnics, hikes, backyard ball games and so much more while staying tick-aware and safe from tick borne illness. Representatives from Tick Free New Hampshire, NH Health Workers for Climate Action, and the NH Nurses Association will host booths inside Prescott Farm historic barn. This talk will focus on what makes the European honey bee unique and the receiver of all the fame and glory while also highlighting some of our native pollinators’ crucial role in our ecosystems. Recommended Ages: Adults Self-Care Reiki **3-Day Course** Learn the practice of Reiki, an eastern hands-on energy healing technique that’s said to help with stress-reduction, relaxation, and healing and improve a person’s general well-being. In this three part class, students will learn enough self-care Reiki to build a self-care practice of their own. Recommended Ages: Adults Making Colorful Soap Learn how to safely make your very own soap using the cold process. We will cover the basics of soapmaking using the cold process which results in a smoother finish using natural materials to add colors to the soaps. A Year in the Life of a Honeybee Honeybees are most noticeable in the summer, but they are busy all year long. This talk will take a look at the year of a honeybee, and what non-beekeepers can do to support them. We will also discuss other bee species and how they are similar and differ from honey bees. Recommended Ages: Adults Invasive Plants The Lakes Region has become home to a variety of non-native plants that often compete with native species and wreak havoc on the land. Join the Belknap County Forester, to learn how and why some plants are problematic and recommended practices for dealing with them. This program will involve some walking on uneven ground as we visit some of the sites where invasive plants are growing at Prescott Farm and get some hands-on practice in identification and effective eradication techniques. Appropriate footwear is required. Recommended Ages: Adults Garden to Table: Easy Composting at Home Turn food and garden waste into nutrients that replenish the soil and reduce trash in our landfills. Learn the dos and don’ts of composting, how to build a simple but functional compost bin, and what it takes to make your compost really cook! Recommended Ages: Youth and Adult Making Plantain Oil to Soothe the Sting Plantain, a common weed of lawns and fields, also holds amazing healing properties for bee stings and skin rashes. Learn how to collect plantain leaves and preserve its healing properties in an oil and salve for year-round use. Recommended Ages: Adults Geocaching: The Nature Treasure Hunting Game Geocaching uses the GPS capability of your smartphone to gamify outdoor exploration (and it’s a fun way to entice children and adults to go outside!) Join us for a geocaching treasure hunt at Prescott Farm and learn about this engaging pastime which is available for free the whole world over!
