Service Learning Opportunities

Learning Through Doing

As a small nonprofit, volunteers are a vital part of our organization. Prescott Farm offers service learning opportunities with training so you can learn about the natural world first-hand and volunteer opportunities so you can put that training to work through service at Prescott Farm.  Come LEARN, DO and BECOME part of the Prescott Farm community with the knowledge that your efforts will help us continue to offer opportunities for all-ages to explore and preserve our environment for generations to come!

Service Learning Opportunities Workshops

Intro to Organic Gardening Series: Planting & Transplanting
NEW DATE! Tuesday, May 21; 6:00-7:30
After the last chance of frost has passed, it is time to plant the garden! Dig in as we plant and learn about the care the plants will need in their first few weeks outside. We’ll cover direct seeding, transplanting, companion planting, plant spacing, trellises, and pest prevention.

Intro to Organic Gardening Series: Weed ID & Maintenance
Tuesday, June 4; 6:00-7:30
Sun and rain are great for our crops, but they are also good for the plants we do not want– weeds! We will review weed identification, including edible “weeds” that you may no longer consider a nuisance, as well as discuss general care for the garden throughout the growing season.

Keeping Chickens
Saturday, September 28; 10:00 – 12:00 p.m.
Using our small flock as a model we’ll learn about housing, food and water requirements, egg collection and more – you’ll be ready to start your own flock as well as become an important volunteer to help take care of ours!

The Turtle Team
Saturday, September 7; 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.
Come and meet Bucky, our locally-famous resident box turtle! We’ll learn all about NH turtles, as well as how to take good care of Bucky. Then you’ll be certified to be one of our important volunteers that comes in regularly to help care for her!

Maple Sugaring Volunteer Training

Our 2019 training sessions are complete, but stay tuned for 2020 dates. In the meantime, you can learn a lot about Maple Sugaring by attending one of our Tap into Maple programs which run every Saturday in March. Register here.

Have you always been interested in making maple syrup but don’t know where to start or lack the trees or time for your own sugaring operation? In this more program you will learn the basics – everything from tree ID to the correct consistency of the finished maple syrup – starting in the classroom and then outside as we prepare our sugarhouse and trees for the upcoming sugaring season.  You’ll then put your knowledge into practice as a volunteer during one or more of our public education programs in March. On this day (or days!) you’ll keep the fire going and monitor sap boiling, carry sap to the sugar house, and assist our educators with other aspects of the public program.
