Learn how to safely make your very own soap. We will cover the basics of the soapmaking process and the equipment required to make more at home. Each participant will take home about 10 bars of seasonally scented soap to enjoy.

The personal nature writing essay is the place where the living world and our experience of it meets on the page. In this winter writing workshop, participants will learn how to put words and sentences together and structure experience in nature into a narrative. Start by spending time outdoors in silence: walking Prescott Farm’s trails or sitting quietly and allowing your senses to take in the world around you. You’ll come back inside for hot tea, conversation, and writing prompts. With a collection of small winter wonders from the natural world, and our experiences of the season,  practice weaving together nature writing and memoir, and work to outline the beginnings of a short, lyrical essay.

This hands-on workshop will cover the basics of how to make simple, delicious cheese in your own kitchen. We will cover equipment, supplies, and basic techniques used to make most types of cheese. Each participant will take part in making a batch of fresh mozzarella, ricotta, and paneer which will be made from start to finish in the class. Participants will take home instructions and a set of ingredients (minus the milk) to make a batch or two at home.

Leaves are not the only way to identify trees and, in fact ,winter lends itself to using bark, buds, fruit and plant architecture to identify woody plants. Join us as we amble through the woods at Prescott Farm to identify common New England trees and shrubs.

Snowshoes or snow cleats available (no extra charge) to borrow or guests may bring their own.

Explore Prescott Farm in a different and special way. Inspired by the weather and the dynamic calendar of the natural world, topics discussed on our moonlit walk will vary but may include: identifying constellations, habits of nocturnal animals, and testing your own night vision abilities.
