The class will emphasize utilizing produce from the garden, common pantry items, and using aromatics such as garlic, ginger, and onions to season the base while making a Three Sisters Stew. Recommended Ages: Adults Crafts Scratchboard is a form of direct engraving where the artist scratches off dark into reveals white or colored layer beneath. The technique uses tools for engraving into the scratchboard, which is usually covered in a thin layer white China clay coated with black India ink. You will receive all the materials, tools and personalized instruction to create your own scratchboard piece. Recommended Ages: Adults Crafts Beeswax becomes abundant in the fall after the honey harvest. As the daylight is receding, now is the perfect time to make beeswax candles. After learning how bees turn plant nectar into beeswax, enjoy the sweet aroma of natural beeswax as you make your own beeswax votives and rolled candles to enjoy at home or give as gifts! Learn the essentials to make delicious jams and jellies including fruit selection, equipment, and canning methods while making a jam and fruit butter to bring home. Whether you are new to mushrooms, have read a book or two, or are an experienced forager, you will leave with new knowledge and insights. Join us as we amble through the woods, identify trees and shrubs, and learn more about the science behind falling leaves. Preserve the beauty with decorate bowl that will remind you of these vibrant hues even after the trees are bare. Recommended Ages: Adults Cooking Come to this hands-on workshop to learn techniques for making and rolling fresh pasta dough. After making the pasta dough, we will turn it into ribbon-style noodles as well as a fall pumpkin ravioli. Registration closes the day before this class begins. You will learn the art of creating and processing your own pulp and dipping a screen stretched across a frame into a vat of pulp made from recycled paper. You then lift the screen out of the vat. The entire process includes dipping which will yield some handmade sheets that can be used once dried and pressed. Recommended Ages: Adults Crafts The fruit of the bayberry shrub has been used to make the pleasant smelling candles that are synonymous with the holiday season since Colonial times. Learn more about this native shrub and make your very own tapered bayberry candles. Join us in our teaching kitchen as we learn about baking yeast-raised sweetbreads and create a traditional holiday loaf of your own to take home and finish in your own oven. Recommended Ages: Adults Crafts Join us as we encase bars of soap with decorative felted wool packages that you can keep for yourself or give as gifts. The felted wool conserves the soap and makes a nice lather. In this class participants will felt three to four bars of soap brought from home using colorful wool to make their own designs. Recommended Ages: Adults Cooking Homemade pies reminiscent of grandma’s start with fresh, seasonal ingredients and are baked from scratch. Yule logs were traditionally decorated and burned at celebrations of the Winter Solstice. Today they’re often used as holiday decorations signifying the season of lights. Decorate your own yule log and other nature ornaments and let it be part of your family’s tradition in any way that works for you! Recommended Ages: Adults Crafts This workshop will offer you the opportunity to create paintings using dyed recycled paper pulp. You will gain and understanding of color mixing, techniques for applying the colored pulp to surfaces, as well as pressing and drying your finished pulp painting based on subjects found in Nature.
