Saturday, November 1; 10:00 am – 12:00 pm Scratchboard is a form of direct engraving where the artist scratches off dark to reveal a white or colored layer beneath. The technique uses tools for engraving into the scratchboard, which is usually covered in a thin layer white China clay coated with black India ink. You will receive all the materials, tools and personalized instruction to create your own scratchboard piece. Saturday, November 1; 10:00 am – 1:00 pm Come to this hands-on workshop to learn techniques for making and rolling fresh egg pasta dough. After making the pasta dough, we will turn it into delicious ravioli and ribbon-style noodles. We’ll top our pasta with a seasonally-inspired sauce to enjoy together at the end. Saturday, November 1; 1:30-3:30pm Learn how bees turn plant nectar into beeswax, enjoy the sweet aroma of natural beeswax as you make your own rolled and hand-dipped beeswax candles to enjoy at home or give as gifts! Saturday, November 8; 10:00 am – 1:00 pm Learn to make three different styles of dairy-free cheese using ingredients like cashews, potatoes, and agar (seaweed) powder. We will make a sauce for macaroni and cheese or nachos, a snacking cheese for crackers, and a meltable version that works in grilled cheese. Saturday, November 15; 10:00 am – 12:00 pm Join us to learn the basics of needle felting, and create your own festive ball-style wool ornament to “deck your halls” this season. Physical Demand: [0] = Entire activity is indoors and seated Saturday, November 15; 10:00 am – 2:00 pm The flavors of the holidays shine in seasonal sweetbreads. Join us in our teaching kitchen as we learn about baking yeast-raised sweetbreads. Create a traditional holiday loaf of your own to take home and finish in your own oven. You may bring a rectangular box to take home your unbaked loaf. Participants should bring a lunch and may bring a rectangular container for carrying home their unbaked loaf. Saturday, November 22; 10:00 am – 2:00 pm Homemade pies reminiscent of grandma’s start with fresh, seasonal ingredients and are baked from scratch. Participants will first learn how to make your own pie crust, then learn the secrets of fruit and custard-filled pies. Bring your two pies home to enjoy or freeze them to share during the upcoming holidays! Participants should bring a bag lunch for this 4 hour class and something to carry their pies home. Saturday, December 6; 10:00 am – 12:00pm This workshop will provide you with the materials, tools and instructions to making your own sheets of paper. Larry Frates will teach you the art of creating and processing your own pulp and dipping a screen stretched across a frame into a vat of pulp made from recycled paper. You then lift the screen out of the vat. The entire process includes dipping which will yield some handmade sheets that can be used once dried and pressed. Saturday, December 6; 12:00-3:00pm Wreaths made from natural greenery are traditionally festive at this time of year. This fun and relaxing workshop will guide as you make and decorate your very own holiday wreath to take home to adorn your home or give as a gift. Saturday, December 13; 10:00 am – 1:00 pm Wreaths made from natural greenery are traditionally festive at this time of year. Saturday, December 20; 10:00-2:00 pm Learn to bake your own from scratch using a sourdough starter! We’ll discuss how to start and keep a sourdough culture alive and use it to make breads and many other baked goodies, including a loaf of bread to finish at home and biscuits that use the sourdough discard to enjoy at the end of the class. You will also go home with some sourdough starter to continue your sourdough baking journey. Participants should bring a bag lunch for this 4 hour class, a container to transport their unbaked sourdough, and a small jar for their starter. Learn more about this native shrub and make your very own tapered bayberry candles. Saturday, December 27; 10:00 am – 12:00 pm Wander the trails of Prescott Farm with a naturalist. We’ll look and listen for signs of wildlife, observe dormant plants, and enjoy the calm of the winter woods.
